about joyce
Joyce Harefa is an Indonesian composer based in Singapore whose work spans pop and classical music, marked by expressive clarity and stylistic versatility.
Alongside her compositional practice, she is an active singer in the Singapore Symphony Youth Chorale (SSYC), where choral performance plays a central role in shaping her musical voice. Through SSYC, she has performed with orchestra under conductors including Wong Lai Foon, Eudenice Palaruan, Hans Graf, Stephen Layton, and Michał Nesterowicz, gaining valuable insight into large-scale ensemble performance and interpretation.
Joyce is currently pursuing a Diploma in Music Composition at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). She holds ABRSM Grade 8 in Piano Performance with Distinction, reflecting her strong technical foundation. Her artistic development has been enriched by observing conducting masterclasses led by Rebecca Tong in Jakarta, deepening her understanding of rehearsal processes and musical leadership. She has also had an orchestral work read by the NAFA Orchestra, an experience that allowed her to collaborate directly with performers and refine her orchestral writing.
Her creative work extends across ceremonial, educational, and community contexts. She has composed a song for the Minister of Religious Affairs, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and clarity of intent in her writing. In recognition of her artistic promise and academic dedication, she received a scholarship from a multinational FMCG company based in Jakarta. She remains actively involved in church music as both pianist and choir singer, where service-based performance continues to inform her approach to vocal writing and collaboration.
Committed to music education and outreach, Joyce has taught a children’s choir at the Reformed Evangelical Church in Singapore, arranging repertoire and leading rehearsals while nurturing musical literacy and expressive confidence. She has also arranged and performed in an ensemble for Vanguard Senior Care, reflecting her belief in music as a meaningful tool for connection.
Artistically, Joyce values intention, integrity, and collaboration. She is currently exploring contemporary classical music while expanding her interests in jazz, pop, and music production.
